Biography
The California based composer and conductor Townsend Losey has served as the 2023-2024 Spire Chamber Ensemble & Baroque Orchestra Conducting Fellow, Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Choir, and the Founding Artistic Director of Ensoma Creative, a highly collaborative choral ensemble with the mission of inspiring creativity and connectedness. Townsend’s impassioned vision for community integration through excellence in music drives him to contribute vigorous psychologically and spiritually charged compositions. Through works for choral and instrumental ensembles, Townsend celebrates the commonalities and complexities of human experience.
Under Townsend’s leadership, Ensoma Creative offered fourteen concerts between 2015-2019, including performances of masterworks of Fauré, Drurflé, and Handel with professional orchestra and soloists, as well as premieres of dozens of original works composed for the ensemble.
At the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak, Townsend directed eleven virtual choir projects with Ensoma Creative featuring local visual artists, soloists, songwriters, arrangers, and composers. As a relational composer who values meaningful collaboration, Townsend excels at composing with specific ensembles in mind, reflecting their unique heart, vision, and strengths.
Townsend’s undergraduate focus was in choral music with continuous membership in elite academic choirs. To further his reputability in the professional choral world, Losey returned to his studies at the University of Southern California, earning a Master of Music degree in Choral Music at the Thornton School of Music. While there, he studied composition with Frank Ticheli and Donald Crockett and conducting with Troy Quinn, Tram Sparks, and Christian Grases.
